Plastic in Our World Oceans

The statistics speak for themselves. Every day, approximately 8 million pieces of plastic pollution find their way into our oceans. There may now be around 5.25 trillion macro and microplastic pieces floating in the open ocean. Around 100,000 marine mammals, turtles and one million sea birds are being killed by marine plastic pollution annually.

By 2050 there will be more plastic by weight than fish in our oceans and the rate of plastic going into our oceans is only increasing. Yet up to 80% of the world's ocean plastic comes from a lack of waste management infrastructure in coastal communities around the world.

Plastic is extremely durable, highly flexible and inexpensive to produce. Unfortunately, it is terribly detrimental to the environment. In fact, we use so much plastic that we send a shocking 12 million metric tons of plastic in the ocean each year. Once there, the plastic pollution breaks down into microplastics that find their way into fish stomachs and bird nests, accumulating in the marine food chain.

At DeVerdi we take everyday as an opportunity to implement all the mesures to reduce plastic as much as we can and be more sustainable as possible. A few days ago, we found Ocean Bottle project, and we couldn't wait to get in contact with them to find a way to collaborate and be part of their organization and what they strive to achieve. And here we are, really excited to be one of their Ambassadors in this amazing project founded by Will Pearsons and help them to spread the word and contribute to reduce the plastic in the oceans.

Ocean Bottle created a long-term network of recycling infrastructure to ensure plastic is collected before it enters our oceans in the first place. Plastic waste is collected by locals in coastal communities who can exchange plastic waste for money, healthcare, tech products, school tuition and micro-finance at their local Plastic Bank.

"With the sale of every bottle we fund collection of 11.4kg of plastic, equivalent to 1000 plastic bottles and invest in people-powered waste management".

- Will Pearsons
